Modification of fulleropyrazolines modulates their cleavage by light Chem. Commun., advance article (2014) Link |
This paper deals with the extraordinary electrochemistry and the tunability of the energy levels for fulleropyrazolines, which allow their use in photovoltaics and charge-transfer systems. The team at the University of Oxford (UOX) in United Kingdom is investigating different methods of photo-controlled release for fullerene systems as part of RADDEL project to use fullerenes as removable corks for encapsulation of radioactive moieties inside carbon nanotubes. One ESR fellow recruited by UOX is working on this. |

In this paper, the formulation and characterization of chemically modified polymeric nanocapsules incorporating the anticancer drug quercetin for the passive and active targeting to tumours is described. The developed nanocapsules provide a system for targeted delivery of a range of hydrophobic anticancer drugs in vivo. Ultraviolet pulsed laser irradiation on multi-walled carbon nanotubes in nitrogen atmosphere Journal of Applied Physics, 115, 093501 (2014)
A. Pérez del Pino, E. György, L. Cabana, B. Ballesteros, G. Tobias
Laser irradiation of randomly oriented multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) networks has been carried out using a pulsed Nd:YAG UV laser in nitrogen gas environment. The evolution of the MWCNT morphology and structure as a function of laser fluence and number of accumulated laser pulses has been studied using electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. The results and knowledge generated from this work will be used by RADDEL network to understand the behavior under irradiation of carbon nanotubes filled with radioactive materials.

Magnetically Decorated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Dual MRI and SPECT Contrast Agents Advanced Functional Materials, 24, 1880-1894 (2014) Link |
In the work carried out for this paper, the teams from CSIC (Spain), KCL (UK) and EMAT (Belgium) developed radio-labeled, iron oxide-decorated multiwalled CNTs (MWNTs) as dual magnetic resonance (MR) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) contrast agents. RADDEL ESR fellow Maxime Bourgognon from King's College London (UK) helped in the development of the in-vitro toxicity assays to test the toxicity of CNTs. These findings will now be extrapolated and applied in RADDEL project for the functionalised nanocapsules filled with radioactive materials. |

Endowing carbon nanotubes with biological and biomedical properties by chemical modifications Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, 65, 1899-1920 (2013) |
This review, a collaboration between RADDEL partners UNITS (Italy) and CNRS (France), deals with the different chemical modifications that are available for carbon nanotubes in order to impart specific properties to this material for biological and medical purposes. Some of the functionalization strategies mentioned in this review are being applied by these two partners in the project in order to improve the biocompatibility of CNTs and increase the capacity to conjugate biologically relevant molecules for the apllication of filled nanocapsules in cancer therapy and imaging. |

The effect of static many-body local-field corrections to inelastic electron scattering in condensed media Journal of Applied Physics 114, 144907 (2013) Link |
This paper deals with some advanced aspects of the physics of inelastic scattering of low-energy electrons (with energies similar to Auger electrons) in bulk amorphous carbon. The team at the University of Ioannina (UOI) in Greece is now extending the work to low-dimensional systems, in particular carbon nanotubes. The results for CNTs will be then implemented to the Monte Carlo code being developed as part of RADDEL project for running more accurate simulations of the interaction of low-energy electrons with CNTs. The ESR fellow from UOI is currently working on this. |
