ARGENTINE: Centro de Investigaciones Ópticas (CIOp)
The Centro de Investigaciones Ópticas (CIOp) is located at La Plata, Argentina and is funded by CONICET and CIC (Comisión de Investigaciones Científicas de la Provincia de Buenos Aires). It is a 30 year old Institute devoted to scientific and technological research in the area of Photonics, Optics and Light Technologies.

ICMCB is, currently, one of the largest research units in Europe in the field of Materials Science, with over 220 people of whom 107 have permanent positions (33 belong to the University and 74 to the CNRS). In addition to its strong connections with industrial world, ICMCB is fully involved in multidisciplinary activities and training at regional, national and international levels with more than 30 foreign countries.

The Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB), is a research centre which depends on the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). The Institute was set up in 1987 and subsequently, in April 1991, the laboratories were opened on the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Since the Institute foundation until February 2008, it has been directed by Prof. Carlos Miravitlles, the coordinator of this Coordination Action.
